AutPlay Therapy: A New Way of Connecting with Children on the Spectrum

As a therapist, I am always on the lookout for play therapy and counseling approaches that could benefit ALL of the clients that I serve. One such approach that I completed training in is AutPlay® Therapy.

What is AutPlay Therapy? AutPlay Therapy was created by Dr. Robert Jason Grant. It is a play therapy approach to helping children on the Autism Spectrum, with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and with other Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

AutPlay Therapy incorporates social skill building, interpersonal connection, and emotional regulation building skills in a fun and playful way for children and teens to enjoy. As a Certified AutPlay Therapy Provider, I meet the child where they are and slowly, through play, work on increasing their ability to connect with others, empathize, and name/verbalize their feelings.

How are parents included? After every session, you--the parent--are brought into the playroom and are taught the new activity that your child and I engaged in during the session. You and your child are then encouraged to engage in that activity a certain number of times prior to next week's session.

Are other people in my child's life involved in the treatment? Of course! Social skills and connection are big difficulties for many children on the spectrum or with ADHD. Each "homework" activity that is assigned can be completed with anyone once they are taught how to do the activity.
