Pool parties, BBQs, beach trips…counseling?
Yes, summertime is full of fun in the sun! The days are longer, vacations are planned, and the children are spending every second of the day outside playing. Having your child start counseling services is the last thing on your mind! With so much going on during the summer, it can be hard to sit down and make that phone call, because let’s face it, who wants to add another weekly activity to their To Do List?
In all reality, summertime is the best time to for a child to begin counseling. Your child has two whole months free where they can dedicate 45 minutes a week in counseling or play therapy to expressing themselves creatively, learning new social skills, discovering better ways of communicating with others, and identifying healthy coping skills. You as the parent have more opportunities to connect with your child, meet with their counselor, and work as a team to prepare them for late August-early September when school begins again.
Research has shown that children who engage in consistent, weekly counseling start making progress within 3-6 months. If your child began counseling this Summer, that 3-month mark would be October, and that 6-month mark would be January. If you waited until school began, teachers started calling home, and the chaos of the holiday season made its entrance, then progress may not even be seen until anywhere between December and March!
Summertime can be a time of both relaxation and counseling. 45 minutes a week is a small chunk of your time that in the long run can help your child grow, heal, and flourish for the new school year.
